Medical Radiation Technologist

NOC: 32121
Regulated: Yes
Body: The Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic & Therapeutic Technologists

Overview

Medical Radiation Technologists (MRT) are trained to deliver machine-driven therapy for patients - using a variety of imaging technologies including X-rays, Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) and/or Computed Tomography (CT). MRTs can detect cancer and use a combination of radiation therapy for treatment.

Internationally trained health professionals (IEHPs) with an MRT background can specialize in four main aspects: Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI), Radiation Therapy, Nuclear Medicine and Radiologic Technology. Roles are typically carried out in public hospitals or specialist private clinics.

Regulation

The Canadian Association of Medical Radiation Technologists (CAMRT) are the main governing body of MRTs in Canada. This includes the licensing and certification for its categories (MRI, nuclear medicine, radiation).

This Pathway

Internationally Trained Health Professionals (IEHPs) will need to obtain a certification from CAMRT to practice as an MRT anywhere in Canada.

After obtaining a CAMRT license, MRTs must also register with the Alberta College of Medical Diagnostic & Therapeutic Technologists (ACMDTT) to work locally, gain representation as a member and adhere to its Health Professions Act (HPA).

Work Now!

Applicants studying towards their CAMRT certification can also work immediately in unregulated roles within the MRT category.

Unregulated roles are entry-level to intermediate jobs that do not require regulation in their respective field. Roles in the MRT category include Medical Laboratory Assistants, Laboratory Technologists or Laboratory Coordinators with administrative duties.
